Desktop video card connection?

I built my own PC a little over a year ago, and installed a 512mb video card. Everything worked smoothly until a few months ago when i moved it, and instead of connecting the vga cable to the video card, i connected it to the motherboard. There was no problem because i was using a 1280x1024 monitor, but now i am switching to 1920x1080, and when i plug the vga cable into the video card, nothing happens. When i look to see how much video memory the computer has, it only says 256, which is the motherboard gpu. What should i do to get the video card working?

In the bios, it is already set to output video to the motherboard and the GPU. It seems to not acknowledge the card.|||You should install the driver for the new card and make it the default.
